What Is the Ghost Prank Filter?

The TikTok effect that puts a grey, white-eyed ghost behind whoever is on camera, and how to make one from a photo or a clip.

Last updated: 2026-10-16

The ghost prank filter is a TikTok camera effect that puts a tall grey ghost, with long grey hair, huge round white eyes and a wide grin, right behind whoever is on the front camera. She follows the person as they move, so the prank works live: you prop the phone up, call someone over and film their face the moment they spot her on the screen. Ghost Prank makes the same kind of video with AI, from a photo or a short clip you already have.

Where the Ghost Prank Filter Came From

Ghost filter pranks are not new on TikTok. In 2022 a floating, see-through ghost with glowing red eyes went around the app, mostly used on young children, and parents and therapists criticised it for frightening them (Scary Mommy, September 2022).

The wave that took off in early October 2026 uses a different ghost: grey skin, long grey hair, huge white eyes, a wide grin and clawed hands. Most posts are filmed in a bathroom with the phone propped on the sink. Within a week the most-watched ghost filter pranks had passed 7 million views each (as of 16 October 2026), and CafeMom reported on 12 October on the backlash against parents using it on toddlers. Couples and friends use it too, like @maeveplusryan pranking her boyfriend and @armaan.390688 showing how the ghost follows him, the two clips above.

Why the Prank Works

  • The ghost only exists on the screen. When the person turns around, the room is empty, and that confused look back at the phone is the joke.
  • She stays behind you. The effect tracks the person, so stepping aside or leaning away does not get rid of her.
  • The bathroom set-up. With the phone on the sink, the person stands close to the camera and the ghost seems to be standing right behind their shoulder.
  • Halloween timing. The wave arrived in October, when people are already looking for a scare to post.

How the Ghost Follows the Person

In the posts the ghost isn't pasted on top of the video like a sticker. She stands behind the person: their head and shoulders cover part of her body, and as they lean toward the phone or away from it, she moves with them and stays at their shoulder. You can see it in the clip from @armaan.390688 above: he leans in, waves and steps back, and the ghost keeps the same place behind him. That's what makes people check behind their backs. The video mode here asks the AI for the same thing: the ghost is placed behind the main person in your clip and follows their movement; in a photo video, she moves with the animated photo.

Live Filter or AI Version: What's the Difference?

The live TikTok filter and Ghost Prank make the same kind of prank in different ways:

Ideas That Work Well (Adults Only)

  • The bathroom mirror moment. The classic set-up of the trend: someone doing their hair or washing their hands at the sink.
  • The partner who hates horror films. Like the boyfriend in @maeveplusryan's clip: the more they hate scary things, the better the reaction.
  • The roommate in the hallway. A clip of someone walking past a doorway, with the ghost close behind them.
  • The calm selfie. A smiling photo of yourself, so the joke is that you never notice what rises behind you.

How the AI Version Works

The live effect only works while you film in the TikTok app. Ghost Prank adds a similar ghost after the fact, in one of two ways.

From one photo (5 credits):

  1. Your face, clothes, room and light stay as they are in the photo.
  2. The photo is animated as if it were filmed on the front camera: you smile and talk while the ghost rises over your shoulder.
  3. You get an 8-second video at 720p, vertical 9:16 (16:9 for a landscape photo), with an eerie hum and a horror sting.

From a clip you filmed (10 credits):

  1. Everything in the clip stays: the people, their movements, the camera and the sound.
  2. The ghost is added behind the main person and follows them as they move.
  3. You get the same clip back, up to 10 seconds long, at 720p.

Ghost Prank Filter Questions

Is the ghost in the filter real? No. The ghost is a digital overlay drawn on top of the camera image, which is why nobody is there when the person turns around.

How do I find the ghost filter on TikTok? TikTok has several ghost effects, and most people find them by searching "ghost" in the effects panel of the camera. They only work live, while you record.

Is Ghost Prank the TikTok filter? No. Ghost Prank is an independent website and isn't affiliated with TikTok. It uses AI to add a similar ghost to a photo or a clip you already have.

Can I make it with a photo of my child? No. Every photo and clip must show adults aged 18 or older who agreed to be pranked.
